Google Nipping at MapQuest’s Heels

Heather Hopkins at Hitwise has an analysis of maps traffic, showing Google gaining more on the category leader. However the recent upgrades and redesign at MapQuest have reportedly been well received and may have slowed Google’s march a bit.

Here’s her traffic chart:

Matt McGee has a long post about it at SEL.

This is a battle of brand (MapQuest) vs. traffic (Google). Google continues to drive huge traffic to its Maps site, although it also drives considerable traffic to MapQuest.

Despite huge investments in mapping, Microsoft Live Maps doesn’t seem to be getting commensurate attention. I suspect this is largely about Microsoft’s search share and its inability to expose its own mapping products in the same way that Google can.
