I’ve been following the mapping “space” as a feature of local search for a long time. There are great and amazing things going on.
Recently, as most of you probably know, a tanker truck had a freak accident in the early morning last Sunday and the resulting fire/explosion destroyed a key section of the freeway.
Both Yahoo! Maps and, seemingly, MSFT Live Maps updated their displays to capture the changed traffic information, but Google Maps does not reflect the problem nor does MapQuest (which doesn’t offer live traffic):
Update: Its as if Google’s ears were burning because after I wrote this post it does seem that Google Maps has updated to capture the new traffic reality.
Update 2: I was wrong. It was momentary traffic patterns Google was reflecting rather than the structural damage. That may also be the case with what I saw on Live Maps too.
