Should You Charge Users to Contribute?

Now that user-generated content is becoming what you might call “table stakes” for local sites and a must-have strategy element for pretty much any new site, “second order” questions arise. Along those lines Ahmed, a frequent reader and commenter on this blog, proposes charging users a member/subscription fee to be able to post content.

He’s not arguing for a subscriber fee to access the content, only to post it (in order to raise the overall quality of content). It’s a totally counter-intuitive suggestion but very interesting and worthy of more thinking/discussion than I can do right now.

You can read his post here.
