Attack of the Niche-Tech Job Boards

VBeat

TechCrunch, GigaOm and, now, VentureBeat all have job boards. All three sites are rep’d by John Battelle’s Federated Media (which has nothing to do with the jobs part). VentureBeat is differentiating on the basis of accepting only jobs in the $100K+ range.

As Matt Marshall points out in his article/announcement, “[T]he job market is the tightest it has been in years — and getting tighter. Good employees are hard to find. Employers continue to express frustration with general boards like Craigslist and Monster, because they get flooded with unqualified candidates.”

But all this slicing and dicing fragments both the available pool of employers and the audience. This is a metaphor for what’s going on in almost every segment online — and certainly in local. There are tons of competitors because the barriers to entry get lower and lower. So what differentiates a site in the advertiser and the consumer minds? Brand. This is why Google is winning search.

Many sites are no longer able compete on features and maybe even content, because all those elements can so easily be duplicated (e.g., the “yellow pages database”). So unless you’ve got greater “critical mass” (i.e., YouTube) you’ll have to compete on brand. Trusted brands will win (See Craigslist). More “generic” sites will lose. Of course brand is a mix of many variables, including user experience.

The niche-tech job boards phenomenon above is one side of two parallel and paradoxical developments happening online right now: the Internet equivalent of entropy. And on the other side, there is the recombination of the fragments into greater wholes (e.g., Adify, RightMedia, etc.). This latter trend is something like evolution . . .

I had forgotten (and was reminded) that PaidContent has had jobs for a long time too.
