Largely under the radar and through a combination high-value partnerships and ongoing outreach to local community groups, American Towns continues to growth in a steady, measured way. It also continues to monetize its traffic very well. Events are a particular area of strength.
The headline from a press release put out by the company last week was the following: “AmericanTowns.com Continues Rapid Quarterly Growth, Surpassing 1 Million Monthly Unique Visitors — Highest Traffic of Any Network of Hyper-Local Community Websites.”
Here are a couple of relevant bits from the release:
** Traffic grew 50% from the end of 2008, reaching over 1 million unique visitors in March and over 1.2 million monthly visits. (Source: Google Analytics).
- Now ranked in the top 2000 US websites by Quantcast, AmericanTowns.com has the highest daily traffic of any network of hyper-local community websites.** Revenues per thousand pageviews, which a year ago were consistent with industry norms of $4, reached $12 RPM in Q1, with $17 RPMs in 11% of the country.

Though this is not something that’s been disclosed to me I suspect we’ll be seeing a white label offering from American Towns at some point in the future. Again this is speculation.
It’s impressive however that the site keeps plugging away out of the spotlight and is making real revenue. On one level this validates the higher value of local online advertising.
