MapQuest has been rolling out new features at a kind of breakneck pace of late. Indeed traffic data suggests that it needs to in order to regain momentum lost to Google over the past several years.
The brand strength of MapQuest has also sustained the site to some degree in the face of Google’s overwhelming asset: the ability to refer map and local search visits to Google Maps. MapQuest has been to Maps & Directions what Google is to search (the “brand”) . . . although that may be changing.
Yesterday Hitwise released data that showed MapQuest was on the verge of being overtaken by Google Maps but recently snapped back from the brink.

Compete shows Google Maps having already overtaken MapQuest:

I don’t want to suggest somehow that it’s inevitable that Google will surpass MapQuest. But that appears to be the long-term trajectory of the traffic data.

I’m surprised this has taken so long, given what, in my opinion, is Google’s far superior interface.
I wonder how much of this traffic is direct to each site vs. traffic coming from maps being embedded in partner sites. I would guess that the many sites that had embedded MQ into thiers, e.g. retailers building it into their store finders, have been slow to covert to Google and this has slowed Google’s march to mapping dominance.

Virtual Earth plays in the enterprise mapping space and has taken some of those deals from MapQuest.

Ok then, I’ll do it for you. As I wrote yesterday over at Blumenthal’s post about it;

They have now apparently in the comScore data. More on that shortly

I look forward to the comScore info. Compete also shows Google as having moved ahead.
But I think to really understand the total visitor numbers you need to analyze market share by region…unfortunately I haven’t seen direct numbers that do that. It is my sense is that Mapquest has a stronger presence in North America and that many of Google’s gains have been elsewhere.

I think the comScore data is only US/North America.

Great post.. I wanted to share my site with your audience as I think they would greatly benefit from it. I created a website Google Maps vs Mapquest where a user types in 1 address to search, and has results from BOTH google maps and mapquest displayed side by side. I will be adding the ability to show directions from both services side by side as well here soon. The site again is http://www.mapvsmap.com

I am living in Washington State.
I have couple history of frustration with Google map that point at least 4 to 5 miles away.
Ever since then I compare maps between those two.
Google maps got it wrong in WA twice many times than MapQuest.

Thanks Gary B.
I just tested with http://www.mapvsmap.com
The address is 2801 Center Dr. N. Dupont WA 98327, which is Intel location.
Mapquest got it right. You can see how far Google map is off.
