YPA Launches ‘Think Green’ Column

Seeking to overcome the perception that print yellow pages is a waste of paper or that it flies in the face of the greengeist, the Yellow Pages Association has launched an initiative intended to showcase environmentally friendly thinking:

[T]he Think Green Column on its Yellow is Green Environmental Web site. Appearing monthly, the Think Green Columns share opinions, ideas and even historical perspectives on the environment and the yellow pages.

    Right… because environmental impact is the reason for the decline in usage :)

  2. Greg Sterling Says:

    Nope but at the margin it’s another justification for recycling the book in some people’s minds.

  3. Laurence Hooper Says:

    Um, *what* “Yellow is Green Environmental Web site,” exactly? Am I missing something? All I see is a small section within the YPA site itself. Who do they imagine will ever see it? Not consumers, that’s for sure. And even for industry people — who might use a green-oriented site for their own talking points, I suppose — this new “column” is utterly content-free. You’d imagine they’d at least be using YellowIsGreen.com, which just expired per Network Solutions. (Not clear who owned it previously.)

    This is so half-hearted I’m shocked they bothered to draw attention to it. The Yellow is Green slogan, while not exactly convincing, at least sounds like the work of a marketing person. Apparently that was the last time such a person was involved …

    Will: The environment isn’t the main issue, but as Greg has previously observed, you know you have an image problem when *car companies* run magazine ads criticizing your impact on the earth.

    Better half a heart, than none at all, I always say! Please feel free to contact me at the Association with your suggestions for the site, since we’re in the process of redesign. And maybe take a closer look at the information on the site regarding the impact of the product. Just like many print products we’ve struggled and made progress on the environmental front for almost 20 years. And yeah, we the paper insert about us by the makers of SUVs, too.

    Interesting approach.

    @Laurence: YellowIsGreen.com - clever!

    @Stephanie: Having been involved in environmental non-profits such Code-Green (e-waste recycling) and also in the local space for several years, I’m glad to see an effort like this.
