NYT: Weather Channel/.Com for Sale

By Greg Sterling

According to the Gray Lady, Landmark Communications is breaking itself up. Landmark, among other assets, owns The Weather Channel and Weather.com (32 million uniques 10/07). “Weather” is consistently the top or among the top search terms online and in mobile. And Weather.com is a local targeting powerhouse (or powerhaus if you prefer the German spelling). But it also provides vertical/contextual targeting as well.

Some lucky buyer — which the NY Times thinks will be a major media company willing to pay up to $5 billion — will get this cable and online asset, which is still under-leveraged from a local standpoint.
