I had a very engaging discussion with Steven Berlin Johnson, the CEO/founder of Outside.in recently. Because my memory has been destroyed by stress and sleep deprivation I can’t say more than that — except that it was interesting (only partly kidding).
He’s extremely thoughtful about the challenges of local and has written about some of them on a new blog posting called “The Pothole Paradox” about (hyper)local news. Simultaneously, the site has again been upgraded. Each new redesign makes it more useful and usable. Here’s a discussion of the new features.

Another nice feature is the large map views of the content. See here and here. There’s also a new iPhone version of the site as well.
Outside.in is technically a local “news” site but it will probably evolve into something more all purpose eventually.

I had never heard about that site before. Very interesting concept I just wish it had more recently feeds.
