Here’s Bob Tedeschi’s NY Times piece on online coupons. Online coupons represent a tiny fraction of the total market (worth $331.8 billion in 2006 according to CMS, Inc.). More than 79% of the US population uses coupons and over 50% of Sunday newspapers are purchased for the coupons.
I’ve forecasted that the total face value of online coupons will be just over $16 billion in 2010 and the redeemed value of those coupons will be about $2.4 billion.
Coupons have the advantage of going anywhere (print, Internet, mobile) and being totally trackable to the point of sale offline. However, as the article points out, distribution is key to the success of this market online (or on wireless devices).
