News Remix

Here are a number of things I missed or don’t have lots of time to go into:

  • Over the weekend, the NY Times ran a long piece on online real estate featuring Trulia and Zillow. It also discusses how Realtor.com wants to integrate social networking features.
  • PaidContent has an audio interview with Tom Phillips, head of Google Print (ads not books). Rafat summarizes: “In short, this is the program where Google is working with about 100 newspapers to sell their offline inventory in an online auction. So everything you ever wanted to know about the program, below in 30 mins.”
  • Per the WSJ (sub req’d) classic TV shows like Gumby and ISpy are coming to YouTube. This is some welcome, positive PR for YouTube/Google. It will also show the willingness of users to watch full-length shows on the Internet, which had be a matter of question.
  • Michael Arrington has a novel theory of why Powerset is hyping itself so much — aiming for a quick sale to Yahoo!
  • Loren Baker at Search Engine Journal discusses IAC’s vertical/content stragtegy with an Ask box on every site.
  • YouTube “Holy War”: John Battelle talks about fundamentalist political content on YouTube and censorship. Here’s more on militant Islamist videos on the site. This is a very thorny and complex issue.
  • This iMedia piece discusses the anticipated rise of vertical and local search and argues Google may (eventually) lose to these categories. (That’s a much longer discussion related to my post over at SEL.)
  • Dash Navigation gets $25 million in funding. Here’s my earlier post on the Yahoo!-Dash local search deal.
