VZLocal: SuperPages Beyond YP

By Greg Sterling

I was playing around with the Clusty for Wii search engine tonight and stumbled upon VZLocal.com (for Verizon), which resolves to Idearclocal (”powered by SuperPages”).

It’s an interesting departure from SuperPages, with a somewhat strange interface, that offers a tag cloud and local events in addition to the traditional business listings search boxes at the top of the page.

I don’t know whether this was recently created or has been around for a few years. Regardless, SuperPages’ President Eric Chandler signaled to me during a call that there would be many forthcoming experiments for SuperPages’ content distribution and otherwise pushing the boundaries of IYP.

It is interesting in the sense that the size of tags gives away what is being searched on. I would love to know how far back data is analyzes to get that – if it was a week, we could literally see the changes of keywords over the year.

many are not taken by the idearc name, but Eric and his team have been real innovators in the local search space – willing to take risks and try new ad propositions. if they apply that same approach to the user experience, we’re likely to see considerable progress on the local search front.
