Marching forward as it rolls out nationally, Backfence has formally launched Sunnyvalle, CA in Yahoo!’s backyard. Here are a range of previous posts on Backfence.
The thing that Backfence has that makes it different than other local sites with community (e.g., Kudzu, Citysearch, Yelp, Judysbook, Angieslist, InsiderPages, Yahoo! Local, Google Maps, Zipingo, etc.) is local news. That saves it from looking like a me-too site or getting completely lost in this crowd.
Ultimately the newspapers will buy Backfence (I base this on nothing but logic and intuition) because this is what they need to be doing to better serve local communities and create a more dynamic online presence to interact with their readers.
(They also need to get into local real estate both as a source of listings and as a source for broker advertising.)

I wonder how will Backfence work for content like we provide at TasteTV (http://www.TasteTV.com)
